EDP Renewables has begun construction on its second utility-scale solar park in Germany, located near Meuselwitz, Thuringia.

The project will feature 64.6 MWp capacity from around 105,000 bifacial panels, generating approximately 69 GWh annually—enough to power about 22,000 households—and cutting CO₂ emissions by roughly 48,000 tons each. During development, World War II-era unexploded ordnances and underground tunnels were discovered and safely removed or navigated. Scheduled for commercial operation in early 2026, Meuselwitz represents a key step in EDP’s growth in Germany, following its first 87 MWp Ketzin project. The park’s output will support a PPA with Lhyfe to aid green hydrogen production.

House Passage of 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Stuns Solar Industry

Empty U.S. House of Representatives chamber with blue and gold carpet, brown wooden seats, and an American flag on display.

The House’s narrow 218–214 approval of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” on July 3, 2025, repeals key clean energy tax incentives, including the solar and wind Investment and Production Tax Credits, earlier than scheduled.

Despite earlier bipartisan amendments, final language fails to preserve these credits, shocking the solar sector. The bill, now awaiting President Trump’s signature, threatens to stall numerous utility-scale and residential PV projects, triggering heightened uncertainty in investment and workforce planning. Industry leaders warn this abrupt policy shift could slow the nation’s clean energy momentum.

New Jersey unanimously passes bill for automated solar permitting

On July 1, 2025, New Jersey’s legislature passed Senate Bill A‑5265 unanimously, establishing a statewide “smart solar” permitting platform for residential solar and battery installations. Municipalities will be required to accept permit applications via the state’s automated portal or an equivalent platform. The law aims to cut red tape, save time and money for homeowners, installers, and local governments, and is expected to create hundreds of clean-energy jobs while reducing electricity costs. The bill now awaits Gov. Phil Murphy’s signature.

Largest solar project in Wisconsin history gets the wildlife greenlight

Wisconsin’s 1.3 GW Vista Sands Solar project has received crucial support from the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, ensuring the development preserves habitat for greater prairie‑chickens. The landmark agreement secures both renewable energy deployment and wildlife conservation, marking a significant milestone in balancing ecological protection and utility‑scale solar expansion in the state.

Solar surpasses 10% of U.S. electrical generation for a full month for the first time

April 2025 marked a historic milestone: utility‑scale solar contributed 10.64% of total U.S. electricity generation—its first time exceeding the 10% threshold for a full month. That represents a 26% year‑over‑year increase and a 52% gain since April 2023, with solar capacity reaching 236 GW by end of 2024. Combined with wind, renewables supplied nearly 25% of electricity, while carbon‑free generation exceeded 49%.
