Xcel Energy has completed the third phase of the Sherco Solar project in Becker, Minnesota, bringing the facility’s total operating capacity to 710 MW. Built on land associated with the retiring Sherco coal-fired power plant, the project represents one of the largest solar developments in the United States.

Sherco Solar is a key component of Xcel Energy’s transition toward cleaner electricity generation while maintaining grid reliability. The project supports Minnesota’s clean energy goals, provides significant renewable generation capacity, and creates employment opportunities during construction while helping replace electricity previously supplied by coal generation.

Chicago contractor installs solar system fit for a president

A Chicago-based solar contractor completed a high-profile solar installation on a residence with historic significance, demonstrating how renewable energy can be successfully integrated into architecturally important properties. The project required careful planning, customized engineering, and close attention to preserving the building’s appearance while maximizing energy production.

Advanced solar technology was used to improve efficiency without compromising aesthetics. The installation showcases how experienced contractors can overcome technical and design challenges to deliver sustainable energy solutions for premium residential properties. The project also highlights the growing acceptance of rooftop solar across diverse building types and historic locations.

German renewable energy developer Energiekontor has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with energy service provider EHA and retail chain dm-drogerie markt for electricity from an 11 MWp solar park scheduled to begin supplying power in 2027.

Under the agreement, EHA will purchase the electricity from Energiekontor and deliver it to dm stores across Germany, supporting the retailer's sustainability goals. The project highlights the growing demand for corporate renewable energy procurement through PPAs, providing long-term price stability while enabling new solar developments without relying solely on government subsidies.

MaxSolar and Saft enter European BESS partnership starting in Germany

German renewable energy developer MaxSolar has partnered with battery manufacturer Saft to deploy large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), beginning with projects in Germany.

The collaboration aims to integrate advanced lithium-ion battery technology into utility-scale renewable energy projects, improving grid flexibility, supporting renewable energy integration, and enhancing energy security. Germany will serve as the first market before expanding the partnership across Europe. The agreement reflects the increasing importance of battery storage in balancing intermittent solar and wind generation while strengthening Europe's transition to a cleaner and more resilient electricity system.

Germany's degraded peatlands offer up to 268 GW of solar potential

A new study by Fraunhofer ISE has identified between 134 GW and 268 GW of technical solar potential on Germany's degraded peatlands, covering approximately 334,500 hectares. The guidance recommends developing solar projects on previously drained agricultural peatlands while restoring them through rewetting, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and creating additional income opportunities for farmers and landowners.

The report outlines planning, operational, and regulatory considerations for peatland PV systems and supports Germany's climate goals by combining renewable energy generation with ecological restoration. The approach could significantly reduce land-use conflicts for future utility-scale solar development.

Hybrid PPAs see growing adoption in Europe despite a 24% premium over solar PPAs

Hybrid power purchase agreements (PPAs), combining solar, wind and often battery storage, are gaining momentum across Europe despite costing around 24% more than standalone solar PPAs. Businesses are increasingly choosing hybrid contracts because they provide a more consistent electricity supply, reduce exposure to market price volatility, and improve energy security.

The broader generation profile lowers balancing costs and better matches corporate electricity demand throughout the day. As renewable energy markets mature, hybrid PPAs are expected to become increasingly attractive for large energy buyers seeking reliable, long-term access to clean electricity while supporting the expansion of diversified renewable energy portfolios.
